In January 1996, percussionist Takaaki 'Taki' Masuko gathered three friends—violinist Johannes Ammon, pianist Satoko Fujii, and trumpeter Natsuki Tamura—to find out what would happen if, together, ‘moving freely, without goal,’ they took a line on walk.

To my ears, their extemporaneous, yet instinctively organized instrumental conversation ‘walks’ the intersection of free jazz and post-modern chamber music. The quartet uses their palette to render rich, refined landscapes with inventive playfulness and motivic intention.Their musical ‘line’ dances with discipline and virtuosity that they casually let fly in favor of experimentation and play—qualities which make the 2022 album's title 'Senzai Ichigu'—a Japanese phrase which roughly translates to 'a happening that occurs once in a thousand years’—feel particularly apt.
